Why are MLMs doing so well?
It’s no secret that MLMs are doing so well now. MLM a.k.a. Multi-Level Marketing has been notorious for a mixed wave of personal feelings and epithets that would make the average person run –run really fast. But why do so many still join? Why do so many people continue to hate MLMs? After many years of finding this amazing industry, I still wonder why there is such a huge divide. Just like many things in the world, there are people who are for it and people who are against it.
You just have to make sure that before you make any decision about what you think, make one without the influence of someone else’s decision. Do your own review and homework about the industry? What you will find is a whirlwind of stories which consist of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.
So what’s so good about MLMs?
I’ll start off with the good about MLMs and then get into the crazy beliefs that people have.
Over 10 years ago, I was first exposed to the direct sales and MLM (also Network Marketing) industries. And of course, I saw the money first. Most people do. Without money being the most important driving force for the masses, I would find it difficult to believe that MLMs would have the same amount of interest. That’s what is the most important goal in this world, isn’t it? Without money, we would not be able to live a life that’s worth much, unless you lived in a tribe or something.
The best part about MLMs is the pure freedom of free enterprise and the “right” to start your own business. It’s the privilege to be a business owner in some way, even if you didn’t create the brand or even establish the company. You have a method of franchising or licensing market shares of the given MLM Company. One would have a difficult time finding alternative methods for starting their own business without this method.
Is it impossible for the majority of people to be entrepreneurs or self-employed? I wouldn’t say that it’s impossible, but very unlikely. The masses don’t have the investment capital and business savvy to start their own business. You see, we live in a system where the majority is “taught” to work for other people. That’s the traditional thing to do.
But for the minority, this is not exceptional. Some people see past this lifestyle. Where they know in the beginning or get hell bent and worn out from the job later, this type of person will never succumb to the life of a typical employee.
MLMs have and “will” continue to be the driving force of creating the newest millionaires. And for that, I have a great deal of respect for the industry. Also, it teaches people valuable lessons otherwise not learned in their average careers. Whereas some people learn these skills, many will never develop them.
What are some long term benefits of MLMs without the thought of only money?
- Leadership Skills – pretty much a skill that people rarely develop
- Communication Skills – more people develop this, but still lacking in the traditional sense
- Prospecting and Closing skills – very rare for the average person to ever develop and a skill definitely worth the sacrifice of learning
- Time Management Skills – another common requirement in the traditional sense but not when a person juggles a job and works their business part time
- Presentation Skills – to work on 100% commissions gives you the determination to improve this skill
- Time Freedom – to work on your own terms and own your on schedule
- Marketing Skills – I think you’re starting to see the making of an entrepreneur here
And you know there is so much more, but I’ll stop right here.
You see, the average person usually doesn’t acquire these skills over in their respective career. So you can understand how much of benefit just these skills are. Nonetheless, the money is great too.
Let’s get into why these skills or the lack thereof cause MLMs to get a bad rap.
The “bad” that so many people unfortunately focus on about MLMs
People naturally have an instinctive way of dealing with that which makes them feel uncomfortable or out of their natural environment. The aforementioned skills can be intimidating for many people to ever develop. In fact, just the time investment alone will shake a person’s character.
I have found that most successful people, entrepreneurs and celebrities alike, have certain skills that had to be developed over time. But they STILL did it, didn’t they? They still paid the price. This is why MLMs get a bad rap. It’s easy to blame anything outside of yourself, isn’t it? Where there are direct sales opportunities or business opportunities, there are many failures as well. Most sales professionals struggle at first, but the commitment and investment of time in improving their skills usually prevails.
This type of tenacious unshakable character is difficult to find in most people due to the thoughts and perceptions that have about themselves and their environment. And when people struggle, fail and then eventually quit, that negative energy and those negative thoughts travel at lightning speed. In fact, people still talk about the negative past of MLM and also focus on the common setbacks in the industry.
There will always be controversy in most things in our lives, but what we choose to focus on is our business.
MLMs will be here for much longer if not permanently. Only the future will hold the unseen truth of what’s to really come. So how do you separate yourself from the person who has a bad or negative perception due to the consistent struggles they experience? The first thing you have to understand is that MLMs will NOT build your business for you. You cannot completely ride on the coat tails of companies. You have to “create” your own name with in the industry. You have to create your own personal brand. That is what most people fail to understand. So really, it comes back to the lack of training, perseverance, and experience. These attributes in the MLM or network marketing industry are what many people have and duplicate. This is the problem within the industry. But there is a better way? There is a “choice” to develop your skills.
So now this brings us to the Ugly about MLMs
Although I’ve had my good experiences with MLMs in general, I have also experienced “The Ugly”. This is enough to deter most people and can have a lifelong effect on someone’s perception. Where there are good companies and good people in MLMs, there are also a bunch of snakes, liars and con-artists. But what really is the problem here? Is it the concept? Or is it people who mostly cause this perception?
It does suffice to say that people can sometimes be bad. Allow me to elaborate…
If one took an honest, objective look at the MLMs industry as a whole, they will find that many companies have indeed stood the test of time, have outstanding sales professionals, maintain honesty and integrity and sell MORE products and services than recruit new people. However, this cannot be maintained at a consistent level because we are dealing with people here, and people are not perfect. They lie, cheat, and sway the masses into deceptive spirals of false beliefs.
Company owners (people) make false promises and do some pretty nasty things to their sales forces. They jack up prices that are unreasonable and attach some cheesy product to the compensation structure. They mislead and encourage people to do things that sometimes are downright immoral and unethical. But in truth, these companies and the people behind them usually don’t last long.
Unfortunately, what tends to last and last sometimes a lifetime are the negative thoughts and perceptions that are created with these illegal MLMs. And this is a sad state of affairs for the honest companies in the industry.
Thought I give both sides of the story for the person looking to compare.
And for these reasons is why people will have mixed feelings about MLMs. They either have had an experience like the ones I’ve described or have heard of someone they know having the experiences.
Only you can decide for yourself to focus on the positive. Only you can decide what you want to do with your life, not someone who doesn’t have what you want to accomplish. There will always be pros and cons about most things—yin and yang so to speak or good and evil.
So what are you going to decide about MLMs? Are you going to always go through life focusing ONLY on the negative side of things?
That would truly be a failure.
To Your Prosperity and Health,
David
